I am a global travel safety expert.  I provide international travelers with information and advise on how to stay safe when they travel.

I am an independent consultant with 30 years of experience in global security management and emergency response operations with the Department of State, University of Washington and U.S. Army.   I am the President of Barker Global Security.  I advise businesses, schools, NGO’s and other groups planning global travel programs on international travel safety and provide security training.

I served for 20 years as a Special Agent with the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service all around the world.  During my career I was responsible for security at US Embassies and Consulates in Shanghai, China; the Fiji Islands; and Vilnius, Lithuania.

I assisted US citizens overseas in situations ranging from kidnappings and parental abductions to imminent threat of civil war and terrorism.  In Fiji, I directed Embassy security during a coup and evacuation of American personnel.  In Lithuania, I directed training programs to assist the government of Lithuania to combat corruption and to establish the rule of law.  I was part of the State Department’s response team to the 1998 Nairobi Embassy bombing.  I was a member of the State Department’s Mobile Security Division, part of a special response team ready to travel within 24 hours to US embassies in crisis.

Upon retirement in 2010, I joined the University of Washington (UW) and established their international travel security program.  I was responsible for policies and procedures for the security and safety of UW personnel traveling abroad and emergency response procedures.  I provided 24/7 emergency response services for international emergencies.  During my time at UW I was responsible for the response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2011 unrest in Egypt and 2011 earthquake/tsunami in Japan.

Prior to joining Diplomatic Security, I served in the US Army for 10 years.  I served in the 82nd Airborne Division and as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer for the Berlin Brigade.
